Last pictures will come in a few days. Tom and I took some dirt and bits of route 66 to get to Flagstaff. We took a few more dirt roads and popped out just north of the Mogollon rim. We got rained on and enjoyed our last night in camp. This morning we had breakfast at the Knotty Pine cafe in payson, 50 days after our first visit.

Tom is staying out for the weekend (which should include dove season). Look for him to post up shortly.

Monday we left Marin county and headed south on PCH 1. I thought my prior days riding had given me an education in twisty roads. I was mistaken.
Continue reading "Coast to high desert"

Pardon the negativity to come. If that will bother you, stop reading and come back in a day. Pictures may be updated later (connection pending).

Today we completed the Top of the World highway. This high elevation dirt highway connects Dawson to Tok Alaska. The day started out with rain. We packed up in a mist which always makes us happy. That would make today day 9 of rain. The locals say this is the wettest summer they can recall. The weather report still has blue skies 4-5 days out.
The sun set over an hour ago, but its still not dark. The last several days has been a study in related rates. As we go farther north, the days grow longer. As we get farther into the 2nd half of the year, the days grow shorter. Lima to Basin via Butte: 90 miles of dirt followed by 90 miles of back country 2 lane road. Stopped at Ma's Country Store. We passed thru a low grove and saw the ugliest black horse I'd seen. It moved, and I got a better look at its ears and realized I was looking at a donkey. It looked at us, and I realized we were 20 feet from a cow moose.
Continue reading "National Folk Fest - just as expected"
